- Description: Is this a bad price or a bad market? Market Context answers it in three lines, and it has just printed something that has not happened since 2021.

Every altcoin question comes back to the same thing.

Your coin is down 40% and you want to know whether you picked badly or whether the whole market is on the floor. Those need different responses. One means wait. The other means you were wrong about the coin.

Most people cannot tell the difference while it is happening, and that is what costs them.

So we built something that separates the two. It is called **Market Context**.

**Three lines. One scale, nought to a hundred.** Low means cheap against its own history. High means expensive.

Bitcoin is one line. The broad altcoin market is the second. Your coin, whatever chart you have open, is the third.

All three low together means the tide is out and your coin is fine. Your coin low while the market lines are high means the problem is your coin. It answers the question in about two seconds.

The relative strength rows sit underneath and tell you whether your coin is leading or lagging, against Bitcoin and against the wider alt market separately. A coin can beat Bitcoin and still lag its peers, and knowing which is which changes what you do about it.

**And it has just printed something that has not happened since 2021.**

Ethereum against Bitcoin is now reading above Bitcoin's own line. Not a high reading, which happened last year and meant nothing. Above Bitcoin. The last sustained stretch of that was the 2020 to 2021 cycle.

Solana vs The Rest

### How this sits with the weekly Others read

The altcoin line in Market Context is the same measure you already see in the Others read. Same calculation, same bottom zone at 20, same number on any given week.

What differs is the question. The Others read tracks the episode: how many weeks we have been in the zone, how long the two previous ones ran, and what happened after they ended. Market Context puts that same number alongside Bitcoin and your own coin so you can see who is leading.

One tracks the clock. The other tracks the field.

### What the crossover actually means

The level on its own tells you very little. ETHBTC reached the high fifties in mid-2025 while Bitcoin sat near 90 on the same scale. Ethereum was rising and still a long way behind. That is not leadership, that is being less weak.

What matters is which line is above which. Right now ETHBTC reads in the high fifties while Bitcoin reads 16\. That is the crossover, and on the full history it has happened three times: briefly in early 2018, through 2020 into late 2021, and now.

Between 2022 and 2025 Ethereum sat below Bitcoin on this measure almost continuously, and for most of 2023 and 2024 it sat near zero while Bitcoin climbed into the sixties and nineties. Three and a half years of lagging.

---

### The rest of the board

Bitcoin reads 16, deep in its own cheap band. The broad altcoin market reads 19, just inside the bottom zone. Solana reads 21, marginally above both.

So the tide is out across the board, and Ethereum is the one thing moving ahead of it.

That matters because it is the fourth measure this week pointing the same way. The Ethereum Barometer left accumulation while Bitcoin stayed in it. Ethereum's 30-week box climbed out of its cheap band while Bitcoin's went deeper into its. The broad market lifted off the floor without confirming. And now this.

---

### What the panel says about the odds

Across 528 weeks, looking forward thirty weeks from each reading, the alt market behaved differently depending on where Bitcoin sat.

With Bitcoin in its deepest band, where it is now, alts rose 84% of the time with a median gain of 134%, beating Bitcoin by 32 points. In the low band, 69% and plus 49%. In mid, 54% and plus 7%. In the high band, 37% and minus 23%.

The order holds across every column, and alts amplify Bitcoin in both directions.

Read the next section before you do anything with those numbers.

### Three things we will not pretend about

Those figures rest on between four and twelve occasions per band. The deepest band, the one we are in, has five. Tested against a random baseline the relationship returns p equals 0.19, so it does not clear the null. The panel prints that on the chart next to the headline rather than burying it. It describes what has happened. It is not a probability of what will.

Newer coins cannot be measured this way. We ran the calculation on truncated Bitcoin and Ethereum history and compared it against the full-history answer on the same dates. Under five years the reading lands in the wrong band two times in three. The 2021 Bitcoin top read P88 on full history and P39 on two years of it. A short window calls cycle tops mid-range, because the top is the highest thing in its own short memory. The panel flags the coin's line as low confidence and counts the weeks it still needs.

---

### How to use it

Coin falling, both market lines low: market problem, and it resolves with the market.

Coin falling, market lines high: your coin.

Coin rising, market lines low: check the relative strength rows before you get excited.

It will not tell you what to buy or when to sell. It tells you whether the tide is out before you judge your own boat.

I go through all of this on the chart in Monday's members video, including the full ETHBTC history and what the crossover did the last two times it happened.
