Why ranking matters in recessions

Crypto doesn’t vanish in a recession… but liquidity, credit, and risk premia shift hard. If you don’t rank what you own, the drawdowns decide for you.

This chart shows how Bitcoin and Ethereum held relative strength through past macro slowdowns, while smaller assets often collapsed outright.

1) Core thesis for BTC and ETH in recessions

  • Bitcoin… reserve collateral in crypto. It carries liquidity even in stress.
  • Ethereum… second only to BTC. Yield (staking), real use-cases, and settlement depth keep it relevant.
  • Both absorb outflows first, and recover first once policy flips.

2) Cash and tokenised bills for operating needs

Cash is underrated in a crypto recession.

  • Stablecoins… fast exits, but carry counterparty and peg risks.
  • Tokenised T-Bills… emerging as safer cash wrappers, yield-linked.
  • Exit windows… always test two ramps. Don’t assume liquidity will be there in a crunch.

3) Selective outliers… why most fail, a few hold up

  • 99% of altcoins bleed worse than majors.
  • Survivors tend to be in clear trend sectors: 2019 DeFi, 2021 NFTs, 2023 AI + RWAs.
  • In 2026, new narratives may appear… but size tiny, treat as optionality, not core.

4) Invalidations and when to cut

Set your stop conditions before stress hits:

✅ BTC breaking below long-term realised bands
✅ ETH staking participation collapsing
✅ Stablecoin de-pegs that fail to recover
✅ Sector leaders losing 70–80% of liquidity with no return bid

5) Simple allocation ladders

Think in sleeves, not guesses:

Cash sleeve: 20–40% in stablecoins or tokenised bills
Core sleeve: 40–60% BTC and ETH
Risk sleeve: 0–15% selective outliers, small capped, strict invalidations
Dry powder: always 5–10% held back for late-cycle forced sellers

Mini FAQs

Should I rotate fully to cash in a recession?
Not unless your runway demands it. BTC and ETH often recover earlier than equities.

Which sectors are worth the risk sleeve?
Only those with real traction: tokenised assets, high-liquidity DeFi, or assets with institutional adoption.

How often should I rebalance?
Quarterly, unless invalidations are hit. Monthly tweaks lead to overtrading.
